Why?

Last Edit June 25, 1999

If pink is soothing as a room wall color, why don't we paint all the prisons pink? And the schools?
If a high school diploma (or equivalent) is required for any job, why do we let kids drop out of school without one?
If most child molesters were sexually abused as children, why do we allow sexual abuse to occur in prisons? What will we be releasing?
If you can't live on a minimum wage, why is it called that?
Why do welfare payments exceed minimum wage? Doesn't that encourage people not to work? Isn't that backwards?
If there is a teacher-shortage and a demand for smaller class sizes, why are we closing schools?
Why don't teachers want to take tests?
If companies are using adult learning principles to ensure quality technical training, shouldn't we be using these techniques in the high schools?
Why did we stop teaching boys to sew on buttons, fix breakfast and change a diaper?
Why did we stop teaching girls to cook and sew?
        What happened to vocational schools?
If music training and piano lessons help develop math and scientific thinking, why don't we teach this in grade school?
If art allows the development of creative thought, why don't we teach this in grade school?
When we cut the budget, what were we thinking?
Why isn't homework done at home?
Why are the street signs in Boston in a foreign language?
If a student is under 18 but working, why can't they have a credit card?
If aroma therapy works, why don't we use it on violent people? In prison? At work?
If you have to be able to run a computer to hold even simple jobs these days, why aren't high school teachers required to run them?
If 20% of the kids in school are dyslexic in some form (not necessarily reading difficulties), why don't we test for them in first grade?
If 80% of the dyslexic children have IQs well above 130, why aren't we looking for them? Nurturing them? Aren't they a national resource?
If we know that boys (and girls) need physical energy expended during their teen years of angst, why did we cut the budget on PE classes and after school sports?
If 80% of the mothers with children under 10 work, why isn't day-care built into the school facilities?
If there is a shortage of engineers and computer science majors, why are we importing foreign workers instead of training our own children? Did we not see this coming?
If there is a shortage of engineers and computer science majors, why is sexual discrimination still a factor?
Why aren't companies required to provide near-location housing for their employees?
Why aren't prescription drugs free after age 65? Or 70?
If Social security wants you to work until you are 70, why does health insurance stop at 65?
        Why does health insurance stop?
If a girl gets pregnant, why does she have to leave school? Doesn't she need the diploma to be able to take care of the kid?
If a girl gets pregnant, how come the boy doesn't have to leave school?
Why is a school nurse only available on restricted days? Don't kids get sick on other days?
Since they don't seem to handle it very well, why isn't it illegal for jocks to date?
Why isn't tolerance a required subject before high school graduation?
